As women in our 40's and beyond our minds and bodies are experiencing dramatic hormonal changes, but estrogen takes the cake. In a nutshell estrogen helps our bodies to return to a resting and recovered state. In peri-menopause and menopause waning estrogen results in a more dramatic response to stress (exercise, diet, family, work, etc) and a greater difficulty returning to a rested and recovered state. This heightened stress leaves our bodies unbalanced with increased anxiety, insomnia, fatigue and more. With little support from the medical community we are left to wallow in our symptoms.
Many woman, myself included, resort to intense exercise and restrictive diets to combat weight gain, muscle loss and feeling out of shape. The problem is if your hormones are already out of whack this formula can exasperate your symptoms and wreak havoc with your progress. The wrong approach can leave you tired, stressed and unhappy with your progress.
Optimum wellness in peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause requires a unique approach for each woman. Taking an inventory of your stress reduction strategy, sleep hygiene, nutrition, movement, mental wellness and energy balance can go a long way in taking actionable steps to alleviate weight gain, fat distribution and unwanted changes in body composition.

As a certified Personal Trainer, Menopause Health & Fitness Specialist and Healthy Habits Coach who has lived with menopause for 14 years I can empathize. I am 53 years old, 5 years post-menopause and still grappling with symptoms compounded by Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). My hormone roller coaster began at 16 when I was diagnosed with PCOS.
